Chrysler is recalling more than 1.27 million Ram 1500 pickups because seat belt buckle anchors may have been improperly installed — a defect that can compromise how the belt performs in a crash. It’s one of the largest US recalls of 2026.

What happened: According to the recall filings summarized by NHTSA this month, the seat belt buckle anchorage on affected Ram 1500 trucks may not have been fastened to specification at the factory. A belt anchored wrong can put occupants at greater risk of injury in a collision even when they’re buckled correctly.

What it means for you: If you own or lease a recent Ram 1500, assume you’re included until proven otherwise. Owner notification letters began mailing August 18, 2026, but you don’t need to wait for the envelope.

What to do this week:

  1. Run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls — the 17-character number on your windshield corner or registration. It takes under a minute and shows every open recall on the truck.
  2. Call your Ram dealer if the VIN comes back affected. The inspection and repair are free by federal law — parts, labor, everything.
  3. Used-truck shoppers: run the VIN before you buy. An open recall isn’t a dealbreaker (the fix is free), but an unrepaired safety recall is a negotiation point and a to-do item.

The bigger picture: It’s been a heavy recall season. In the same stretch of August filings, Mercedes-Benz recalled over 310,000 vehicles for a parking-brake microswitch issue, Ford recalled roughly 80,000 SUVs for rear seats that can recline unexpectedly during remote operation, and GM recalled Silverado EV and Sierra EV pickups for steel wheels that can crack. If you haven’t run your household’s VINs this year, this is your reminder — the check is free, takes a minute per car, and millions of vehicles on US roads are carrying open recalls their owners don’t know about.

Quick answers

Does a recall repair cost me anything?
No. Federal law requires the manufacturer to fix safety recalls free of charge at any authorized dealer, regardless of whether you bought the truck new or used.
My truck is out of warranty. Does the recall still apply?
Yes. Recalls follow the vehicle, not the warranty. Even a second or third owner gets the repair free.
Can I keep driving while I wait for the letter?
For this recall NHTSA has not issued a do-not-drive order, but a seat belt anchorage issue is worth taking seriously. Call a dealer with your VIN now rather than waiting for the mail.
